What To Look For During Your Next DIY Roofing Inspection

Whether you realize it or not, your roof may be costing you money. Unnoticed issues that turn into unsolved problems can cause major headaches, such as water damage, wasted energy, and eventually, a full roof replacement. It's far better to make those roof repairs now instead of waiting until you have a real mess on your hands.

But if the signs of roof repair are so subtle, how are you supposed to know what to look for? Below are a few things to examine when you do your next visual inspection (which should always be done from the ground for safety reasons); if you see anything that's off, schedule a professional inspection to see if you need to do a roof repair.

Curled Shingles

As the roof gets older and is exposed to the elements over a long period of time, the shingles are going to show signs of wear and tear. A professional roofer can usually replace shingles one by one to prevent them from breaking and letting water into the attic — or even directly into the home — but the first sign that they're needing to be replaced is curling or warping. Look for any kind of disfigurement on your shingles; if you see some, hire a roofer as soon as possible to get them fixed.

Detached Flashing

The flashing is the part of your roof that forms a seal around the chimney. It's usually made of metal and sits directly against the chimney, so pay special attention to that connection point to see if it's starting to pull away. If so, you'll want to hire roof repair services to have it fixed. This is a major entry point for water and can cause water damage and eventually mold inside the chimney area, which can be extremely hard to detect otherwise.

Leaks or Water Spots

If you notice water damage inside your home or water spots forming on the ceiling, you need to get some roofing repair performed immediately. This is a sign that not only is there some kind of issue with the roof, but water has already penetrated into your home for a period of time beforehand, which means you may even have mold present. If you leave this untreated, eventually you'll start to notice sagging in your roof, which is the last stage before the whole roof caves in and allows water to pour into your home unimpeded.
